YellowRibbons4Assange
ABOUT
The video is inspired by a grassroots call to collective action under the hashtag #YellowRibbons4Assange to tie yellow ribbons with free Julian Assange messages to trees, posts, railings etc, to raise awareness of the plight of political prisoner Julian Assange in public places. These actions exemplify the solidarity and connections among campaigners for Julian as ideas such as #Candles4Assange, #Achair4Assange, #YellowRibbons4Assange, and #Clovers4Assange are taken up by supporters and rapidly spread around the globe. Resources needed are simple: chalk, candles, posters, chair, ribbons and in this case an old sheet and pens. So anyone can join in!
ISLE OF WIGHT #ARTISTS4ASSANGE BIOGRAPHY
As a group of Isle of Wight based artists in Free Expression we began regularly sharing our concerns about the persecution of Julian Assange which led us to the idea of using our art as means of raising awareness. Julian’s friendships with artists and his own words, ‘even when words are silenced, creativity can transcend censorship’ also inspired us. From this intention, we held a local exhibition dedicating our art work to the defence and freedom of Julian Assange contributed to a London #FreeTheTruth event in 2019, we set up a Facebook page @artforjulianassange and held candlelit vigils among other actions.
