JOACHIM ZOEPF BIOGRAPHY

He began to play the piano at the age of nine and from 1979 studied saxophone, first in Vienna and then in Cologne. Since 1983 he has been a freelance musician and music teacher. Starting from mainstream jazz, he came to free improvised jazz in 1988 and developed his own way of playing. He gained further experience in New Music, New Music Theatre and cooperation with dancers, actors, sound artists and visual artists. As a sound engineer he is involved in many productions and is responsible for numerous own publications. In terms of cultural policy and as an organizer, he was involved in the Cologne Jazzhaus initiative, the Initiativkreis Freie Musik, was co-founder of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Improvisierte Musik (AIM), the Leitkultur series, the Improvisers Series sub-label, co-organizer of the Improvisierte Musik symposium in Cologne and co-editor of the book “Können Improvisatoren tanzen”.
