Freedom of expression in journalism and art is a fundamental human right and an essential element in a functioning democracy and I feel very strongly about the decriminalisation of individuals like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden who undauntedly speak truth to power. My technique involves juxtaposing portraits of an individual in different poses or portraits of multiple individuals, be they real or fictitious, in order to attempt to convey character and condition. In this painting I’ve chosen to juxtapose Julian and Jesus Christ, the latter who was purported to convey a message of hope and enlightenment, exactly like Julian has done, but suffered injustice and scorn as a result.
